The article link above is about a scandal that has been happening for decades but has only recently been spoken out about. Scandals are revealed through muckrakers, or one who speaks out about scandals and corruptions. The muckraking reveals that mentally ill inmates in Florida, especially those of the Dade Correctional Institution, are not being treated properly. The second link is another article that backs it up.

Eyal Press is the author of the article. The article was published on May 2, 2016. His inside source was Harriet Krzykowski, a former employee at the Dade Correctional Institution. Harriet was a psychiatric technician at the institution. She was told by other workers not to listen to the inmates because the inmates would say crazy things and try to make you believe things. But then Harriet started hearing the inmates say that they were being starved to death and that there was no food on the trays. She started to hear this throughout the whole institution. Turns out, it was true. Often times, the trays that would be delivered to the inmate's cells had no food on them.

Harriet also started to hear that the guards were punishing people in disrespectful ways. These people needed help, and the guards would put them in solitary confinement instead. Things started to get worse. Inmates were now beginning to be killed by the guards. They were killed through starvation and boiling hot showers. Harriet tried to tell people and get help, but no one would listen to her.

All of this has been happening since the 1980's but she finally decided to speak out. Her reasons for telling was because there were a lot of people being tortured and she thought the public needed to be aware of how patients and inmates were actually being treated. The reason the public needs to be aware of the issue is so that the families know what they're really paying for and where they are really sending their loved ones.

Even though I only mentioned the Dade Correctional Institution, this is happening all over the country. It's a nationwide problem that hardly ever gets talked about. There are too many people trying to cover this stuff up instead of informing the public of what is really happening.

  8. This blog is extremely interesting. I was very startled to hear that they would starve them or put them in the boiling showers. I really agree with you about how the media is trying to cover this up, and I agree that it is a major problem today.
